What difference does the browser make?
There are many different browsers available but most internet users first experience is with Internet Explorer (IE) because the majority of PCs run Windows operating systems and IE is
bundled with the software. If you are an AOL user you are using their version of IE. As of August '06, IE has a market share of about 75% overall and an even higher share of the business market. The remaining 25% are taken up by all the
other browsers, but there is one, Mozilla Firefox, that has a significant share of this, and it is growing. Kiss Web Design ensures that you site works
well in both IE and Mozilla. Both browsers treat the code that produces your site slightly differently so some pages may vary slightly in appearance but the differences are usually cosmetic and of little consequence. Top of Page
Why can't you use the same font as I use in my brochure? The font in your
brochure is not a web safe font. In order for a font to appear on your site exactly as you want it to it needs to be available on the visitors computer. At this time your font cannot be accessed from your server. There are many fonts
available but there are only about 9 that are regarded as web safe. However, banners and titles can be recreated as images in order to maintain your brand image. By using a web safe font you can be sure that your text is readable on all
computers. Top of Page
I have just seen a site and the font was huge and the page looked out of sync. Can you make sure that does not happen to mine?
There are scripts available that will force the size of a font on the visitor. However, if your visitor has poor eyesight they are unlikely to thank you for doing that. There are controls in your browser for adjusting the
size of the font. In IE & Mozilla they are set to medium by default and the majority of users don't change them. Kiss Web Design believes that a disabled visitor will think more highly of you if you allow them to adjust the font size even
if the formatting of your site is affected. Top of Page
Should I switch to broadband? ADSL and Cable broadband services are now widely available and the prices are falling. With many people suffering at the hands of the internet dialler scam, often having to pay phone bills
of several hundred pounds, switching to broadband will also offer protection. Once you have switched to broadband and disconnected your dial up modem, any diallers that hijack your system will be unable to connect to the internet.
An inexpensive, slow ADSL connection is all you need. Home connection kits are readily available and easy to install. To find out if broadband is available in your area and to choose a provider go here. It may be more convenient to stay with your current ISP. Top of Page
Can I have lots of images on my site? A large number of images on a page will significantly slow down the loading of the page, especially on a dial up connection. Try to break your images down into collections of about a dozen
and have each group on a separate page and let the visitor decide if they want to view them all. Top of Page
Will I be at the top of the search engine results? There are many factors that affect your search engine results. If you are in a highly competitive business it will be very difficult to obtain high search engine results. Google is the
most popular search engine, and consequently, the one everyone wants to be on. Your site will be submitted to all major search engines and made as accessible to them as possible. The significance of the links to and from your site also
affects your search engine results. You can help yourself by adding your site to any directory that you are not listed on. But beware of Free-for-all link pages. Most just want to spam you. There is no magic formula that will get you to
the top of the results. Most often it is just a case of biding your time. Also, each search engine treats the information it collects differently. You may find yourself well represented in Yahoo and not listed at all in Google. Top of Page
I have had a phone call/email from a company that promises to submit my site to thousands of search engines for £XX
per month. This is a good idea isn't it? Many of these companies run software that automatically submits your site to Free-for-all pages, most of which the search engines ignore. They will also submit it to the
Open Directory
Project (DMOZ) which is a directory that is used and re-branded by hundreds of search engines, including many of the largest. Kiss Web Design will submit you to all of the major search engines and directories, including DMOZ. There is no
guarantee that they will accept your site, no matter how good it is. If your category is well represented they may not need you. No amount of money will get you accepted on any free directory. In fact, multiple submissions of your site may
result in it being treated as spam and being rejected - and you would be paying for the privilege. There are many paid directories and you must decide if they are likely to be cost effective. All Kiss Web Design sites contain a piece of
code that tells a search engine when to return and re-index your site - and that costs nothing. Top of Page
Can I pay the search engines to put me at the top of their results? All of the major search engines offer sponsored links, usually on a pay-per-click basis. These links are clearly displayed at the top and to the side of the results. You can set a maximum
budget so this is an ideal way to find out if sponsored links will work for you. Send an email or call for more information. Top

Do I have to have links on my site? No you don't. But you should bear in mind that search engines look for relevant links from and to your site when deciding where to place your site in the results. Carefully chosen links
can enhance the information on your site and links back from related sites will make your site seem more important. Top of Page
I have noticed that some links open a new browser window and some don't. Why is that? If you ask that question to ten different web designers you will probably get ten different answers. Kiss Web Design subscribes to the view that internal links should open in the same
browser window whilst external links away from your site should open a new window. When the visitor has found out the additional information they require they can close the window and return to your site thus reducing the possibility of
you losing a new customer. Top of Page
I have just been quoted £3000 for a site and you have quoted me £450. You seem too cheap. What will I be missing out on? There are two ways to price any job (not just web sites), time pricing - you pay for the time it takes to do the job at a fair rate, and value pricing - the designer
estimates how much extra business the web site will be worth to you and then puts in a quote for his slice of the pie. Which would you rather pay for? If you prefer value pricing tell us how much you expect to make from your site and Kiss Web Design can easily
add some extra zeros to your invoice - if that is what you really want. Top of Page
Hosting at just £30 per year. Have you made a mistake? For several years low cost hosting has been available in the US whilst the price stayed high in Europe. In recent years the cost of hosting has fallen dramatically in the UK to levels
that compete with the US. Some UK hosting companies have continued to charge a high price because there are still companies that think they need to pay a high price. For most small to medium sized businesses a standard hosting package is
more than adequate. There are more advanced hosting packages available if you should need them. Top of Page
How long does it take to transfer a domain name to a new host? These days transferring the domain away from the company you bought it from should be unnecessary. You just need to change the DNS address. The whole process should take no more than about 48
hours. Email for further information. Top of Page
I am concerned that having created my web site you will be asked to create a site for a competitor. Would you refuse to create their site on the grounds that there may be a conflict of interest? All clients' details are handled in the strictest confidence. The only information about you that is made available is that that is in the public domain - i.e. your web site. All
other information is considered private and covered by the Data Protection Act. Likewise, do not ask for confidential information about other clients. In the unlikely event that there is a genuine possibility of a conflict of interest Kiss
Web design will sub-contract the competitor site but retain management control of the contract in order to maintain quality standards. Top of Page
Can I pay by instalments? Normally payment is made in full on completion of the contract, however, if you prefer a staged payment, then we can agree specific points within the project when payment becomes due. Top of Page
Do you do adult sites? Kiss Web Design will not create a site that may be connected with illegal activity, no matter what its content. However, most adult sites are not involved in illegal activity and your
project would be considered, though you should bear in mind that Kiss Web Design reserves the right to refuse any project that it is felt might harm the image of this business. Even if the project is accepted it may not be promoted from
this site or added to the portfolio. Specialist hosting may also be required. Top of Page
Who owns the copyright to my site?
In simple terms you own the copyright
to the text and images that are displayed on the screen. Kiss Web Design owns the copyright to the code that is required to display it. Top of Page
